For-profit companies are getting in the adult day-care business.  Time will tell if they will be able to sustain quality services.  A Medicare  program, PACE, reimburses providers for keeping people out of nursing homes through medical and social offerings.  Here is a link to a NYT article:

Some Things Never Change - Social Cliques

I tried going with my Mom to functions at a local Senior Center, but there was a definite chill in the air.  We didn't 'belong' to anyone.

The Fair Housing Act applies to facilities
.  This NYT article by Paula Span documents how the federal government is enforcing individual rights to reasonable accommodations.  Long-term care facilities can create barriers to socialization, depending on the status of the residents - independent living vs. nursing units.  It is suspected that, in an effort to market to the 'young-old', certain areas were not welcoming residents needing more care.  Facilities should not underestimate the power of educated residents and their families!
